1. Why do you think some people volunteer their time to help others?

I think a lot of people volunteer because it gives them a strong sense of purpose. On one level, they genuinely want to make a difference and feel a moral obligation to give back. At the same time, helping others can be deeply satisfying; it boosts self-esteem and creates a feeling of belonging. For some, it’s also a way to develop skills or expand their social circle in a meaningful context.

2. What are the benefits of volunteering, both for individuals and for society?

For individuals, volunteering can be incredibly enriching: they gain practical skills, build confidence and often develop a broader perspective on life. It can also improve mental health by reducing isolation and giving people a positive focus. On a societal level, volunteers fill important gaps in public services, strengthen social cohesion and promote values like empathy and solidarity, which ultimately make communities more resilient.

3. Do you think people today are less willing to help strangers than in the past?

I suspect people may appear less willing because they’re more cautious and time-pressed than previous generations. With constant news about scams and crime, many of us are wary of getting involved, especially with strangers. However, I wouldn’t say compassion has disappeared; it’s just expressed differently, for example through online campaigns or donations rather than spontaneous, face-to-face assistance on the street.

4. How can schools encourage young people to help their communities?

Schools can play a crucial role by integrating service projects into the curriculum rather than treating them as optional extras. They could partner with local charities and give students real responsibilities, so the experience feels authentic, not just a box-ticking exercise. Recognising these efforts with awards or academic credit would also signal that community service is as valuable as exam results.
