Part 3

Why do you think some skills are easier to learn as a child than as an adult?

I’d say it mainly comes down to brain plasticity and mindset. Children’s brains are wired to absorb patterns effortlessly, so things like languages or musical skills sink in almost subconsciously. On top of that, kids are less self-conscious, so they’re not afraid of looking silly or making mistakes. Adults, by contrast, tend to overthink, fear failure, and juggle responsibilities, which all slow the learning process.

What is the best way for adults to learn a new skill?

For adults, the most effective approach is usually a mix of structure and real-life practice. I think you need clear goals, a routine, and feedback from someone more experienced, whether that’s a teacher, a mentor or even an online community. At the same time, you’ve got to apply the skill in authentic situations, because that’s what really consolidates learning and keeps motivation high in the long run.

Do you think practical skills are as important as academic knowledge?

In my view, they’re equally important but in different ways. Academic knowledge gives people a framework for critical thinking and helps them understand complex issues, like economics or climate change. Practical skills, on the other hand, let you function independently in everyday life, whether that’s cooking, fixing things, or managing your finances. Ideally, education should strike a balance, so students don’t end up highly educated on paper but helpless in real situations.

How has the internet changed the way people learn new things?

The internet has completely transformed learning by making information instant and interactive. Instead of relying solely on textbooks or formal courses, people can watch tutorials, join forums, and take online classes from experts worldwide. One drawback, though, is information overload and questionable quality, so learners need digital literacy to filter out unreliable sources. Still, overall, it’s made learning far more accessible and personalised than ever before.
