Model answer (Band 8-9)
Part 3Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.
1. Why do you think music is such an important part of every culture?
I’d say music matters so much because it acts as a kind of shared memory for a culture. Through lyrics, rhythms and even instruments, people pass down stories, values and beliefs, often more powerfully than through books. It also creates a sense of belonging; when people sing or dance together, social barriers melt away and they feel part of something bigger than themselves.
2. How has the way people listen to music changed in recent years?
Listening habits have been transformed by streaming and smartphones. Instead of buying physical albums, most people now dip into endless online playlists, which encourages more casual, on‑the‑go listening. On the one hand, this has made music far more accessible and diverse; on the other, it’s arguably reduced the attention people give to a single artist or album as a coherent work.
3. Do you think traditional music is being lost among younger generations?
To some extent, yes, because global pop and social media tend to overshadow local traditions. Many young people see traditional music as old‑fashioned or irrelevant to their daily lives. That said, it’s not disappearing completely; in some places it’s being reinvented, blended with contemporary genres, which can actually revive interest and keep it alive in a modernised form.
4. What effect can music have on people's emotions and behaviour?
Music can be a powerful emotional trigger; a single melody can evoke nostalgia, joy or even sadness within seconds. This emotional impact often shapes behaviour, whether that’s athletes feeling more motivated, shoppers lingering longer in a store, or protesters feeling united by a chant. Because of this, music is frequently used deliberately to influence mood, from advertising to therapy.
