What problems does severe traffic congestion cause, and what measures could be taken to reduce it?

In many expanding cities, traffic congestion has become a daily reality, with short journeys turning into lengthy ordeals. This development brings a range of serious social, economic and environmental problems, but there are several practical steps that governments and individuals can take to alleviate it.

One major consequence of chronic traffic jams is economic inefficiency. When commuters spend hours stuck on the road, valuable working time is lost, productivity declines and businesses face higher transport costs. In cities like Jakarta or Lagos, for example, firms must factor delays into delivery schedules, which increases prices for consumers. In addition, severe congestion has damaging health effects. Prolonged exposure to air and noise pollution contributes to respiratory diseases, stress and poor mental well-being. This burden falls particularly heavily on children and the elderly living near main roads. Finally, quality of life deteriorates as people sacrifice time that could be devoted to family, leisure or exercise, simply to travel to work.

To tackle these issues, a combination of infrastructure investment and behaviour change is required. First, governments should develop efficient, affordable public transport systems, such as metro lines, bus rapid transit and suburban rail. When these services are reliable and comfortable, many drivers are willing to leave their cars at home. Singapore’s integrated transport network illustrates how this can dramatically reduce congestion. Second, policies that discourage private car use can be implemented, including congestion charges in city centres, higher parking fees and strict vehicle ownership rules. London’s congestion zone, for instance, has cut traffic volumes and encouraged cycling. Finally, urban planners must design cities that reduce the need to travel, by promoting mixed-use developments and safe infrastructure for walking and cycling.

In conclusion, while severe congestion damages economies, public health and daily life, coordinated transport policies and smarter city design can substantially ease the problem.
