1. Why do you think international travel has become so popular in recent decades?

I’d say it’s a mix of affordability, accessibility and mindset. Flights have become relatively cheaper, so ordinary people can travel, not just the wealthy. On top of that, social media constantly showcases exotic destinations, which really fuels people’s wanderlust. And I suppose as the world globalises, learning languages, studying or working abroad all feel more normal and even necessary.

2. What are the benefits of experiencing other cultures first-hand?

Experiencing another culture in person forces you to question your own assumptions. You see different values and lifestyles up close, which can make you more open-minded and empathetic. It also sharpens practical skills, like communicating across language barriers. In the long run, that kind of cultural awareness can make people more tolerant and better prepared to work in international teams.

3. How does tourism affect the economy of a country?

Tourism can be a huge economic driver. It creates jobs not only in hotels and restaurants, but also in transport, agriculture and crafts that supply the sector. Foreign visitors bring in valuable income and often help diversify the economy, especially in regions that can’t rely on heavy industry. That said, if a country depends too heavily on tourism, it can become quite vulnerable to global crises.

4. What negative impacts can mass tourism have on local communities?

Mass tourism can easily overwhelm local infrastructure and push up prices, especially rents, so residents get priced out of their own neighbourhoods. It can also lead to environmental degradation and turn historic areas into overcrowded theme parks that feel artificial. Over time, local culture may be commercialised or diluted, as traditions are adapted mainly to entertain visitors rather than serve the community itself.
