On top of that, they give strangers a neutral place to mix – children play, older people chat, communities hold events – so they quietly build a sense of belonging and social cohesion.

A well-designed space can subtly nudge people into healthier and happier habits. For instance, if there are safe walking paths, seating in the shade and accessible playgrounds, more people are likely to walk, exercise and spend time outdoors. Good design also considers lighting, noise and accessibility, so different groups – from parents with pushchairs to people with disabilities – can actually use and enjoy the same space in comfort and safety.

In many modern cities, there’s a serious shortage of green space, especially in densely populated areas. Urban planners often prioritise commercial developments and high-rise housing over parks because the financial returns are more immediate. That said, some forward-thinking cities are starting to introduce vertical gardens, rooftop parks and green corridors, but these innovations still don’t fully compensate for years of rather short-sighted planning.

Ultimately, local governments should take primary responsibility, because maintenance requires stable funding, long-term planning and clear accountability. However, I’d argue it works best as a partnership: authorities handle major upkeep and safety, while community groups and nearby businesses can adopt specific areas, organise clean-up days or report problems quickly. This shared ownership tends to deter vandalism and helps public spaces feel genuinely cared for, not just superficially managed.
