Model answer (Band 8-9)

Part 1

Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.

1. Do you play any sports?

Yeah, I do. These days I mainly play badminton with a few friends from work. We’ve sort of formed a casual team, and we book an indoor court once or twice a week. I’m not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I love the fast pace and the fact that it keeps me reasonably fit without feeling like a chore.

2. How often do you exercise?

I try to exercise around four times a week, though it sometimes depends on how hectic my schedule is. On weekdays, I usually go for a quick run in the evening, just to clear my head after work. At the weekend, I’ll either play badminton or do a longer workout at the gym, focusing on strength training so I don’t lose muscle.

3. Did you play any sports when you were a child?

Yes, I did. When I was in primary school, I was really into football and I’d play almost every afternoon with the kids in my neighbourhood. Later on, in secondary school, I joined the basketball team, which was quite demanding. Looking back, those team sports taught me a lot about discipline and cooperating with different kinds of people.

4. Do you prefer watching sport or taking part in it?

To be honest, I much prefer taking part in sport. I like the physical challenge and the rush of adrenaline you get when you’re actually on the court. That said, I do enjoy watching big tournaments on TV, especially the World Cup, but if I had to choose, I’d definitely rather be playing than sitting on the sofa as a spectator.
