Model answer (Band 8-9)

Part 1

Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.

1. What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I’m really into a mix of quiet and active things. On weekdays, I usually unwind by reading crime novels or watching a good documentary. At the weekend, though, I like to be a bit more energetic, so I go cycling along the river or play badminton with a couple of close friends to clear my head.

2. Do you have any hobbies that you have had since childhood?

Yes, drawing has been a constant hobby since I was a kid. I used to sketch cartoon characters in the margins of my schoolbooks, and over the years it’s evolved into more detailed pencil portraits. I don’t do it professionally or anything, but it’s a comforting, almost therapeutic habit that I’ve never really grown out of.

3. Do you prefer to spend your free time alone or with other people?

I’d say it depends on my mood, but I slightly prefer spending it with other people. After a long day, grabbing coffee and chatting with friends helps me switch off more than being on my own. That said, I do cherish a bit of solitude at home, especially when I’m reading, because it gives me space to recharge and collect my thoughts.

4. Is there a new hobby you would like to try?

Absolutely, I’ve been thinking about taking up photography. I’m always snapping quick pictures on my phone, but I’d love to learn how to use a proper camera and really understand things like composition and lighting. I reckon it would be a great way to combine creativity with getting outside and exploring new places.
