Model answer (Band 8-9)
Part 2Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.
To be honest, a skill I’d really love to learn is proper photography, especially portrait and street photography. Right now I can just point and shoot on my phone, but I don’t actually understand things like aperture, shutter speed or composition in a professional way, and that really limits what I can do.
If I had the chance, I’d start by taking a short course at a local photography studio or community college. I’d like a teacher who can explain the technical side clearly and then set practical assignments, like shooting in low light or capturing movement. On top of that, I’d probably follow online tutorials and join a local photography club, so I could go on photo walks with more experienced photographers and get feedback on my shots.
I don’t think it would be easy at all. There’s quite a steep learning curve when it comes to mastering manual settings, and it takes a lot of practice to develop an eye for lighting and framing. On top of the technical difficulty, I’d also have to overcome a bit of shyness when taking pictures of strangers in public, because good street photography often involves getting quite close to people.
The reason I’m so keen to learn this skill is that I want to document everyday life in a more meaningful way. Photography would give me a creative outlet and a way to tell visual stories, instead of just snapping random pictures. In the long run, it could even open the door to freelance work or exhibitions, but even if that never happens, I’d still gain a lifelong hobby that helps me notice and appreciate the beauty in ordinary moments.
