Model answer (Band 8-9)

Part 2

The song I’d like to talk about is “Fix You” by Coldplay. It’s one of those songs that, no matter how many times I hear it, still hits me right in the feels. I’m not a hardcore Coldplay fan or anything, but this particular track has sort of become the soundtrack to a few important moments in my life.

I first heard it when I was in secondary school. A close friend of mine played it for me after I’d failed a really important exam and was feeling pretty crushed. We were sitting on some steps outside the school building, sharing a pair of earphones, and as the song built up to that powerful chorus, I remember feeling this strange mix of sadness and hope wash over me.

In terms of what it’s about, I’d say it’s essentially a song about comfort, emotional healing and standing by someone when they’re going through a rough time. The lyrics talk about trying your best but not succeeding, and then having someone who promises to “fix you”, or at least stay by your side while you pick up the pieces. The melody starts off gentle and almost fragile, then gradually becomes more intense and uplifting, which really mirrors that journey from despair to determination.

This song means so much to me because it’s tied to several turning points in my life. I’ve listened to it during heartbreak, before big exams, and on lonely late-night walks. Every time, it helps me process whatever I’m going through without feeling overwhelmed. It also reminds me that vulnerability isn’t a weakness, and that having even one person who genuinely supports you can make a world of difference.
