Model answer (Band 8-9)
Part 2Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.
One time that really stands out is when I taught my younger cousin how to ride a bicycle. He was about eight at the time, and I was staying with his family for the summer holidays, so I kind of took on the role of the older sibling for a few weeks.
At the beginning, he was absolutely terrified of falling, so I started really slowly. First, I showed him the basics, like how to sit properly, where to put his feet, and how to hold the handlebars without gripping too tightly. Then we found a quiet, slightly sloping street near his house, and I walked beside him, holding the back of the seat while he pedalled. Every few minutes, I’d demonstrate a little bit, then let him copy me, and I kept giving him really specific feedback, like “Look straight ahead, not at your feet.”
After a couple of days, I secretly started to loosen my grip and let go for a few seconds at a time, without telling him. When he realised he’d been riding on his own, he was completely over the moon. Within a week, he could start, stop, and turn corners on his own, and by the end of the holiday he was racing his friends around the block. So I’d say he picked it up incredibly well.
Teaching him was surprisingly rewarding. I felt proud, not just because he learned a new skill, but because I’d helped him overcome his fear. It also made me appreciate how patient you have to be as a teacher, and it gave us a much closer bond, which, to be honest, was the best part.
