Model answer (Band 8-9)

Part 2

Original model answer written by our team for practice — not an official IELTS answer.

I’d like to talk about Mr Carter, my English teacher from my final year of high school. He taught literature and language, but to me he was much more than just an English teacher; he was the first adult who really treated us like independent thinkers rather than kids who just had to memorise things.

He taught English, obviously, but his classes felt more like lively debates than traditional lessons. Instead of drilling grammar rules, he’d bring in poems, song lyrics, even film clips, and ask us what we thought. If someone gave a clichéd answer, he’d gently push back and say, “OK, but can you go a bit deeper?” That habit of probing made the subject incredibly engaging and, frankly, quite eye-opening.

In terms of personality, he was this interesting mix of laid-back and demanding. He joked around, dressed casually, and never raised his voice, but his standards were sky-high. He’d cover our essays in detailed comments, sometimes brutally honest, but always constructive. What stood out was his genuine curiosity about our opinions; he’d listen carefully and remember the smallest details we mentioned in passing.

He influenced me in several ways. First, he completely changed my attitude to learning: I stopped seeing school as a chore and started treating it as a chance to explore ideas. More importantly, he made me believe my voice mattered, which boosted my confidence to speak up in class and later at university. Because of him, I’ve also tried to adopt a more critical, reflective way of thinking, questioning assumptions instead of taking everything at face value.
