Band 6 sample essay
Highlighted = useful vocabularyNowadays, companies which sell sweets and soft drinks are advertising to young children on TV, apps and social media. I agree that this advertising should be banned completely, because it is harmful for children health.
Firstly, children cannot understand that advertisements want to sell them something. They see a cartoon character with a colourful drink and they think it is fun, they don't know it has a lot of sugar. For example my little nephew always ask his mother to buy a chocolate cereal which he saw on YouTube. Young children is very easy to influence and companies know this, so it is not fair.
Secondly, eating too much junk food cause many health problem. In my country the number of fat children is increasing every year and many of them have tooth decay. If children see these adverts every day, they will want to eat snacks instead of healthy food like fruits and vegetables. Doctors say that bad eating habits which start in childhood is difficult to change when they grow up.
Some people argue that parents are responsible for what their children eat, not the companies, and a ban is too strict. It is true that parents have a important role. But parents can not control everything their child watch on the phone or tablet, because there is too many adverts. So the government must to help parents.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that advertising unhealthy snacks and drinks to children should be banned completely. It protect children and help parents to make healthy choices for their family.

Why this is Band 6: criterion by criterion
Task Response
Band 6The writer answers the question and the position is clear from the first paragraph to the last ("I agree … should be banned completely"). Two relevant reasons are given — children's inability to recognise advertising and the health effects — and the opposing view about parents' responsibility is mentioned and answered. However, the ideas are not fully developed: the nephew example is personal and brief, "Doctors say" is a vague appeal to authority, and the essay never explains why a complete ban is needed rather than a partial one, which is the key word in the question. This places Task Response at Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion
Band 6The essay is clearly organised into an introduction, two reasons, a counter-argument and a conclusion, so the overall progression is easy to follow. The linking, however, is mechanical ("Firstly", "Secondly", "In conclusion"), and two sentences begin with informal connectors ("But parents…", "So the government…"). Referencing is sometimes unclear: in "bad eating habits which start in childhood is difficult to change when they grow up", "they" appears to refer to the habits rather than the children. Cohesion is effective overall but faulty in places, which is Band 6.
Lexical Resource
Band 6The vocabulary is adequate for the topic, with some appropriate items such as "junk food", "tooth decay" and "make healthy choices". There is noticeable repetition of "children", "adverts" and "parents", and one word choice is inappropriate in register: "fat children" should be overweight children in an academic essay. There is also a spelling/word-form error — "can not" should be written as one word, cannot — but none of these problems prevents understanding, so Lexical Resource reaches Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Band 5This is the weakest criterion. The essay relies mainly on simple sentences, and the few complex structures are often inaccurate. Errors are frequent: subject–verb agreement ("my little nephew always ask", "Young children is", "junk food cause", "habits … is difficult", "their child watch", "there is too many adverts", "It protect children and help"), plurals ("many health problem"), articles ("a important role"), the possessive ("harmful for children health" should be harmful to children's health) and a modal error ("must to help"). There is also a comma splice ("they think it is fun, they don't know…"). Although the meaning is usually recoverable, the frequency of these errors places grammar at Band 5.
Useful vocabulary and collocations
- cartoon character
- accurate and relevant; at Band 7+ you could say brand mascot.
- junk food
- correct everyday term; in a formal essay also use foods high in sugar and fat.
- tooth decay
- precise health term that is better than problems with teeth.
- bad eating habits
- correct collocation; upgrade to unhealthy dietary habits.
- make healthy choices
- natural phrase; make informed choices adds precision.
How this essay could reach Band 7
- 1Fix the agreement errors first: every singular subject needs a singular verb (my nephew asks, junk food causes, it protects), and check there are before plural nouns. This one area would lift grammar towards Band 6.
- 2Explain why the ban must be complete — for example, argue that banning TV adverts alone would move advertising to apps and games — so that the key word in the question is fully addressed.
- 3Replace informal or vague choices ("fat children", "Doctors say") with precise, academic language (overweight children, health experts generally agree).
