In recent years, an increasing number of schools have replaced printed textbooks with digital devices such as tablets and laptops. While some teachers see this as a progressive step, others argue it can undermine learning and focus. In my view, screens can be extremely beneficial if used in a controlled and well-designed way, but uncritical adoption is risky.

Supporters of classroom technology highlight several advantages. First, tablets offer instant access to up‑to‑date information, whereas printed textbooks quickly become outdated, especially in fast‑moving subjects like science and technology. This allows students to explore current research, videos and interactive simulations, which can make abstract concepts more concrete. For example, a physics student can visualise complex forces through animations rather than relying solely on static diagrams. Secondly, digital resources can be tailored to individual needs; learners with reading difficulties can adjust font size or use audio features, making materials more inclusive.

However, critics point to serious drawbacks. Digital devices can be highly distracting, tempting students to check social media, play games or browse irrelevant websites during lessons. Even when educational apps are used, constant notifications and the temptation to multitask may fragment attention and reduce deep concentration. Moreover, extended screen time has been linked to eye strain and sleep disruption in adolescents, which can indirectly harm academic performance. There is also the concern that students may rely too heavily on search engines, weakening their ability to memorise key facts and develop sustained reading habits.

On balance, I believe schools should neither fully embrace nor completely reject screens. Instead, they should integrate technology selectively: for tasks where interactivity and personalisation clearly enhance learning, while preserving printed materials for long, focused reading and note‑taking. Clear rules, device‑free intervals and teacher training are essential to minimise distractions. Used in this balanced manner, tablets and laptops can enrich education without damaging students’ concentration.
