In many parts of the world, children are spending more time on smartphones than engaging in outdoor play or reading. This trend poses a range of physical, psychological and educational problems, and in my view it requires coordinated action by parents, schools and governments.
One serious concern is the impact on children’s physical health. Excessive screen time tends to encourage a sedentary lifestyle, which is linked to childhood obesity, poor posture and disrupted sleep patterns due to blue-light exposure. Equally worrying are the psychological consequences. Constant access to games, social media and short-form videos can shorten attention spans and make children less able to tolerate boredom or concentrate on sustained tasks, such as reading a book. Moreover, children who primarily interact through screens may struggle to develop social skills, such as empathy and conflict resolution, that are usually learned through face-to-face play.
There are also educational drawbacks. Children who rely heavily on smartphones for entertainment often read less, which can limit vocabulary growth and critical thinking. In addition, unfiltered access to the internet exposes them to inappropriate content and misinformation at an age when they lack the maturity to evaluate what they see.
To address these issues, the most effective starting point is the home. Parents should establish clear, age-appropriate limits, such as no phones during meals, homework or before bedtime, and model good habits themselves. They can also make outdoor activities and reading more attractive by planning family outings or creating regular reading routines. Schools have a complementary role: they can restrict smartphones on campus, incorporate digital literacy lessons that teach responsible use, and offer engaging sports and arts programmes. Finally, governments could issue evidence-based screen-time guidelines, support public campaigns, and require stronger parental controls and child-safe default settings on apps and devices.
In conclusion, children’s overuse of smartphones threatens their physical, emotional and intellectual development, but firm boundaries, better education and sensible regulation can substantially mitigate these risks.
