IELTS Writing Task 2: People Marrying and Having Children Later

In many societies, adults are postponing marriage and parenthood until their thirties or even forties. In my view, this trend is largely positive for individuals and for society, although it does carry certain risks that must be managed.

One clear advantage of later marriage is that people enter long-term relationships with greater emotional maturity and self-knowledge. Young adults in their early twenties are often still experimenting with careers, lifestyles and values; marrying during this period can mean that couples grow apart as their identities evolve. By contrast, those who marry later have usually completed their education, gained work experience and discovered what they genuinely want from life and a partner. This can reduce the likelihood of divorce and create a more stable home environment for any future children.

Delaying parenthood can also bring practical benefits. Older parents typically have higher and more secure incomes, allowing them to provide better housing, education and healthcare for their children. For example, in many European cities, couples now wait until they can afford to buy an apartment before starting a family, which gives their children a safer and less stressful upbringing. Furthermore, individuals who have already pursued personal goals, such as travel or career advancement, may approach parenting with greater patience and commitment, rather than feeling that children have curtailed their ambitions.

However, this trend is not without drawbacks. Biologically, fertility declines with age, which can lead to difficulties conceiving, higher rates of pregnancy complications, and additional pressure on health services. On a societal level, if too many people delay having children, birth rates may fall below replacement level, threatening the long-term sustainability of the workforce and pension systems.

On balance, I believe the advantages for relationship stability and child welfare outweigh these concerns, provided governments respond with supportive healthcare and family policies that mitigate the demographic and medical risks of late parenthood.
