In many parts of the world, cash is rapidly being replaced by digital payments through cards and mobile applications. While this trend undeniably offers greater efficiency and convenience, it also raises serious concerns. In my view, the advantages of a largely cashless society outweigh the disadvantages, but only if governments and companies implement strong safeguards.

The main benefit of going cashless is increased security and efficiency. Digital payments reduce the risk of theft and loss associated with carrying large amounts of cash. For instance, if a bank card or smartphone is stolen, it can usually be blocked within minutes, whereas stolen cash is almost impossible to recover. Moreover, electronic transactions are faster and more traceable, simplifying tax collection and helping authorities combat crime, such as money laundering and the shadow economy. For businesses, digital payments streamline accounting and reduce the costs of handling, transporting and securing physical money.

Another significant advantage is improved convenience in daily life. Contactless cards and payment apps allow people to pay for public transport, groceries and online services instantly, often without queuing or handling change. In cities like Stockholm and Singapore, where cash usage is already very low, consumers benefit from integrated payment systems that work across multiple services, making economic activity smoother and often cheaper.

However, a society without cash is not without drawbacks. The most serious is the exclusion of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or those in rural areas who may lack digital skills, smartphones or reliable internet access. There are also legitimate concerns about privacy and data security, since every transaction can be tracked and large technology companies may gain excessive control over people’s financial lives. Furthermore, system failures or cyberattacks could temporarily paralyse economic activity if cash is no longer available as a backup.

Despite these issues, I believe the benefits can predominate, provided that governments maintain a basic cash infrastructure, offer digital literacy programmes, and enforce strict data protection and competition laws. With such measures in place, societies can enjoy the efficiency and transparency of digital payments while minimising the risks of exclusion and surveillance.
