IELTS Writing Task 2: Hosting Major International Sporting Events

In recent decades, an increasing number of cities have vied to host major international sporting events, despite the vast sums of money required. While such events can undoubtedly generate benefits, I believe that, in most cases, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

On the positive side, hosting a global tournament can act as a powerful catalyst for urban development. Governments often use the fixed deadline of an event to upgrade transport systems, build new airports and regenerate run-down districts. For example, Barcelona’s transformation following the 1992 Olympics is widely credited with turning it into a world-class tourist destination. In addition, international exposure can boost a city’s global image, attracting future tourism, foreign investment and conferences long after the closing ceremony.

Nevertheless, these benefits are far from guaranteed, whereas the drawbacks are both substantial and common. First, the financial burden is enormous: stadiums, athlete villages and security infrastructure frequently exceed initial budgets, leaving taxpayers to service long-term debt. The 2004 Athens Olympics, for instance, left behind underused facilities and significant public liabilities that coincided with Greece’s broader fiscal crisis. Second, many new venues become “white elephants” — expensive to maintain but rarely filled — diverting funds from essential services such as healthcare, education and affordable housing.

Furthermore, the promised social gains are often overstated. Temporary construction jobs disappear quickly, while local residents may be displaced to make way for facilities or luxury developments tailored to visitors rather than the community. Environmental damage, from accelerated construction and mass tourism, can also undermine the sustainability agendas many host cities claim to support.

In conclusion, although hosting major sporting events can bring improvements in infrastructure and international prestige, these benefits are highly contingent and unevenly distributed. Given the typical pattern of overspending, underuse of facilities and social disruption, I am convinced that the disadvantages generally outweigh the advantages for most host cities.
