I'd like to talk about the Yangtze River, which is probably the most significant river in my country, China. It runs right across the south-central part of the country, from the glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau all the way to Shanghai on the eastern coast, so it literally cuts through the heart of China.

In terms of size, it’s enormous. It’s the longest river in Asia, stretching over six thousand kilometres, and it passes through or near dozens of major cities. The river basin itself is vast, covering a huge portion of our territory and supporting hundreds of millions of people who live along its banks.

Visually, the Yangtze is quite varied. In the upper reaches it’s narrow and fast-flowing, with dramatic gorges and steep cliffs, especially around the famous Three Gorges area. Further downstream it widens out into a broad, muddy ribbon, with gentle curves, sandbanks and flat fertile plains on either side. On a misty morning, when the sun’s just coming up, the water can look almost silver, which creates a really atmospheric, almost poetic scene.

People use the Yangtze for all sorts of purposes. It’s a crucial transport route for cargo ships and passenger ferries, and it supplies water for drinking, irrigation and industry. The river also generates a huge amount of hydroelectric power, particularly from the Three Gorges Dam. Besides that, it supports fishing communities and attracts tourists who go on river cruises to enjoy the scenery.

This river is important not only economically, as a kind of lifeline for trade, agriculture and energy, but also culturally and historically. It features in countless poems, paintings and folk stories, and many key events in Chinese history took place along its banks. In a way, if you understand the Yangtze, you understand a large part of China itself.
