The family member I spend the most time with is my older sister, Mai. She’s three years older than me, and to be honest, she’s more like a second mum and my best friend rolled into one. We grew up sharing a tiny bedroom, so we’ve always been close, but over the last few years our relationship has become a lot more like two friends on the same wavelength.

What we usually do together really depends on our mood. On weekdays, we often cook dinner together after work and sort of decompress by chatting about our day while chopping vegetables. At the weekend, we like going for long walks around the lake near our apartment, and sometimes we treat ourselves to a coffee and just sit people-watching. We also binge-watch crime documentaries and argue, in a friendly way, about who the culprit is before it’s revealed.

In terms of how often we see each other, it’s practically every single day because we live in the same flat. Even when our schedules are hectic, we at least cross paths in the kitchen or in the living room late at night. On Sundays we make a point of having a proper sit-down breakfast together, without phones, which has turned into a kind of weekly ritual for us.

I suppose I spend so much time with her for a few reasons. Firstly, I genuinely trust her judgement, so I naturally turn to her when I have a dilemma or a tough decision to make. Secondly, we have very similar values and a similar sense of humour, so being with her feels effortless rather than exhausting. Most importantly, she’s seen me at my worst and still has my back, so there’s this deep sense of comfort and emotional security whenever we’re together.
