Writing Prompt
You have recently moved to a new town, and you would like a friend to come and stay with you.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:
- tell your friend about your new town
- invite them to come and stay with you
- suggest some things you could do together during the visit
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sam,
Show Band 8–9 model answer
Dear Sam,
I hope everything’s going well with work and your guitar lessons. I’ve finally settled into the new town, and I think you’d really like it here.
The place is called Riverton, a small but lively riverside town about an hour from the city. The centre is full of independent cafés, bookshops and street art, and there’s a beautiful path that runs along the river for miles. It’s much quieter and greener than where I lived before, but there’s still plenty going on, especially at weekends.
I’d love you to come and stay with me for a few days. I have a spare room now, so you’d have your own space, and the train from your station is direct and pretty cheap if you book in advance.
While you’re here, we could rent bikes and explore the riverside trail, and there’s a weekend food market with live music that I’m sure you’d enjoy. There’s also a small art cinema just around the corner from my flat, and we could finally have that film marathon we’ve talked about for years.
Let me know when you’re free over the next couple of months, and I’ll plan around you.
Best,
Alex
Why this response works
This letter would likely achieve a high band because it fully addresses all three bullet points with clear, well-organised paragraphs and a coherent overall purpose. The tone is consistently informal yet natural and appropriate for writing to a friend. A wide range of vocabulary is used accurately (e.g. “independent cafés,” “riverside trail,” “film marathon”), and there is effective paraphrasing of the task. Grammatical structures are varied, including complex sentences and conditionals, with a high level of accuracy and natural control of tense and aspect, resulting in a smooth, fluent response of appropriate length.
