Writing Prompt

A neighbour has recently been making a lot of noise late at night, which is disturbing you.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter:

  • introduce yourself and explain where you live
  • describe the problem the noise is causing you
  • politely suggest what your neighbour could do to help

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Neighbour,

Dear Neighbour,

My name is Alex Chen and I live in the flat directly below yours on the second floor. We have probably passed each other on the stairs, but I realised we have never been properly introduced.

The reason I am writing is that, over the past few weeks, there has been quite a lot of noise coming from your flat late at night, usually after 11 p.m. In particular, the loud music, frequent banging sounds and raised voices make it difficult to relax and, more importantly, to sleep. I start work very early in the morning, and the broken sleep is beginning to affect both my concentration and my health.

I completely understand that everyone needs to unwind and occasionally have friends over, and I do not want to spoil your enjoyment of your home. However, I would be very grateful if you could keep the volume lower after about 10 p.m., and perhaps avoid moving heavy furniture or playing bass-heavy music late at night. If you are planning a late gathering, a quick note in advance would also help me to prepare.

Thank you very much for your understanding. I am sure we can resolve this amicably.

Yours sincerely,
Alex Chen

Why this response works

This letter meets the task fully by clearly introducing the writer and location, describing the nature and impact of the noise, and making specific, polite suggestions. The tone is consistently courteous and balanced, acknowledging the neighbour’s perspective while stating the problem firmly. Cohesion is strong, with logical paragraphing and smooth progression from introduction to problem to solution. The range of vocabulary (e.g. “broken sleep”, “bass-heavy music”, “unwind”, “amicably”) and complex grammatical structures are varied yet accurate, demonstrating a high level of control with no noticeable errors or awkward phrasing.
