In recent years, online learning platforms have transformed higher education by enabling students to complete full degrees without setting foot on campus. While this development brings clear benefits in terms of access and flexibility, it also raises serious concerns about educational quality and student well-being. In my view, the disadvantages currently outweigh the advantages.
On the positive side, online courses radically expand access to university-level study. People in remote areas, working professionals, and caregivers can follow recorded lectures at convenient times and submit assignments electronically. For example, many employees now enhance their qualifications through part-time online master’s programmes while maintaining full-time jobs. Moreover, digital platforms can offer a vast range of courses from world‑renowned institutions at relatively low cost, democratising expertise that was once available only to a privileged minority.
However, these benefits must be balanced against significant drawbacks. The most serious is the loss of face‑to‑face interaction, which is central to deep learning. Spontaneous discussions after class, group work in seminars, and informal conversations with lecturers help students develop critical thinking, communication skills and professional networks. In a purely virtual environment, such interactions are often superficial or easily avoided, leading to isolation and low motivation. Many students enrolled in fully online degrees report struggling to concentrate and experiencing higher dropout rates than their on‑campus peers.
Furthermore, online assessments can undermine academic integrity. Even with sophisticated proctoring software, verifying who is actually completing the work remains problematic. This is particularly concerning in disciplines that require practical skills, such as laboratory sciences or clinical training, where physical presence and hands‑on supervision are indispensable.
In conclusion, while online platforms greatly improve flexibility and widen participation, the erosion of in‑person engagement, increased risk of academic dishonesty and difficulties in teaching practical skills mean that, at present, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. A blended model, combining online materials with meaningful on‑campus experiences, is likely to be the most effective approach.
