The primary reason fewer people cook at home is the increasing pressure of modern work. In many countries, dual-income households have become the norm, and long working hours leave adults with limited time and energy to prepare meals from scratch. In addition, the expansion of food delivery apps has made ordering restaurant dishes almost effortless, often with only a marginal increase in cost compared to buying ingredients. Clever marketing by fast-food chains and supermarkets further promotes the idea that cooking is time-consuming and unnecessary, especially when cheap, ready-made options are readily available.

This trend has several notable effects on families. On a practical level, heavy reliance on processed and restaurant food often leads to poorer nutrition, contributing to rising rates of obesity and diet-related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. On a social level, the decline of the shared, home-cooked family meal erodes an important opportunity for communication. Traditionally, cooking and eating together helped parents transmit cultural values, table manners and even basic life skills; when meals are eaten separately and on the go, these functions are weakened.

At the societal level, reduced home cooking alters food culture. Traditional recipes and cooking techniques risk being forgotten, replaced by standardised, globally homogenous fast food. Healthcare systems may come under increasing strain as diet-related diseases become more prevalent. At the same time, however, the growth of the food delivery industry generates jobs and tax revenue, highlighting that the trend is not entirely negative.

In conclusion, time pressure, technological convenience and aggressive marketing largely explain why home cooking is in decline. While this offers short-term ease, it carries long-term health, cultural and social costs that families and policymakers should not ignore.
