More and more people who live in cities are choosing to keep pets such as dogs and cats, even in small flats.
Why do you think this is happening? Is it a positive or negative trend?

In many large cities, an increasing number of residents are keeping pets, even in very small apartments. In my view, this trend is mainly driven by social and psychological factors, and it is broadly positive, although it does create certain challenges that must be managed.
One key reason for the rise in pet ownership in urban areas is growing loneliness and social isolation. City lifestyles are often fast-paced, competitive and anonymous; people may live far from their families and have limited time or energy for maintaining friendships. A dog or cat can provide companionship, emotional support and a sense of routine. For example, many young professionals I know adopted pets during or after the Covid-19 pandemic, explaining that an animal helped them cope with stress and remote working. In addition, rising numbers of couples delay having children, and pets may partly fill this emotional gap.
Another factor is the changing cultural attitude to animals. Pets are increasingly seen as family members rather than possessions. This shift is reinforced by social media, where owners share photos and stories, encouraging others to consider pet ownership. Moreover, the growth of pet-related services—such as dog-walking apps, pet daycare and veterinary clinics—makes it more practical for city dwellers with busy schedules to care for animals.
Overall, I believe this trend is largely positive. Pets can improve mental health, reduce stress and even promote physical activity when owners take dogs for regular walks. However, problems arise when people keep animals in unsuitable conditions, such as large, energetic dogs in cramped studio flats, or when owners lack time, money or knowledge to care for them properly. In such cases, pets may suffer from neglect, behavioural issues or health problems.
In conclusion, urban pet ownership is increasing mainly because of emotional needs and shifting social norms. While this development can greatly enhance people’s quality of life, it should be supported by responsible ownership and sensible regulation to ensure animal welfare is not compromised.
