In recent years, shared family mealtimes have become less common, with many people eating alone, on the move or in front of a screen. In my view, this is largely a negative development because it weakens family relationships and can harm both emotional and physical well-being, although a small number of benefits can be acknowledged.
On the positive side, flexible eating habits may suit today’s fast-paced lifestyles. Parents often work irregular hours, and teenagers may have after-school activities or part-time jobs. Allowing each person to eat when convenient can reduce stress and ensure that no one skips meals simply to fit a fixed schedule. In addition, modern technology enables families to stay in touch in other ways; for instance, some relatives use messaging apps or video calls to connect even if they rarely share a table.
However, these advantages are outweighed by the drawbacks. First, regular family meals provide a natural time for conversation, where problems can be noticed early and support can be offered. When everyone eats separately or while watching television, genuine communication is often replaced by silence or distraction. Over time, this may lead to emotional distance between parents and children, and even misunderstandings or conflict.
Secondly, eating in front of a screen can damage people’s health. Research consistently shows that distracted eaters tend to consume larger portions and make poorer food choices, such as fast food or snacks. In contrast, families who sit together are more likely to serve balanced, home-cooked dishes and model healthy eating habits for younger members. In my own experience, children who grow up with regular family dinners are not only closer to their parents but also less likely to develop weight problems.
In conclusion, while flexible mealtimes may appear convenient, the loss of shared family meals is predominantly negative because it undermines communication and encourages unhealthy eating patterns.
Why this response works
This essay would be rated highly because it maintains a clear, consistent position that the trend is mainly negative, while still acknowledging limited benefits. Ideas are logically organised with clear topic sentences and smooth progression between paragraphs, showing strong coherence and cohesion. Vocabulary is varied yet natural (e.g. “emotional distance”, “distracted eaters”, “balanced, home-cooked dishes”), and grammar is accurate with a wide range of complex structures. The examples are specific and relevant, supporting the argument convincingly without repetition.
