I’d like to talk about my former manager, Daniel, who’s honestly one of the most competent people I’ve ever worked with. He was the marketing manager at a mid-sized tech company where I did an internship a couple of years ago, and his performance really left a lasting impression on me.

His job involved a whole mix of things. On the one hand, he had to come up with big-picture marketing strategies – deciding how to position our products, planning campaigns, and setting targets. On the other hand, he also dealt with a lot of nitty-gritty work, like analysing data from social media, coordinating with designers and copywriters, and presenting campaign results to senior management. So he was constantly juggling creativity and hard numbers, which is no easy task.

I got to know about his work because I was directly in his team. I sat in on his brainstorming sessions, watched him negotiate with clients, and helped him prepare slide decks for quarterly reports. Even when I wasn’t involved in something, I’d often hear other departments mentioning how reliable he was and how smoothly things went when he took the lead. So I had both a front-row view and a kind of background perspective on what he actually did.

What makes him so good, in my view, is a combination of sharp intelligence and strong people skills. He’s incredibly organised and always seems to be two steps ahead, anticipating problems before they blow up. At the same time, he’s very approachable and calm under pressure, which motivates everyone around him. To be honest, he sets high standards but supports you so well that you actually want to rise to them, and that’s a rare quality in a manager.
