Band 6 sample report
Highlighted = useful vocabularyThe table show the percentage of people who work in four sectors in one country in 2000, 2010 and 2020.
Overall, there were many changes in the employment during this period, and the services was the biggest sector.
Firstly, in agriculture the percentage was 12% in 2000. It decreased to 8% in 2010 and then it decreased again to 5% in 2020. This is probably because many farmers moved to the cities to find better jobs. Secondly, manufacturing also fell steadily. In 2000 it accounted for 30% of the workforce, but in 2010 it fell to 24% and in 2020 it was only 18%.
Thirdly, the services sector increased a lot. It was 48% in 2000 and it rised to 58% in 2010. In 2020 it reached a peak of 67%, which means that about two thirds of workers was working in services. Services was the most popular sector in every year.
Finally, construction was 10% in all three years, it remained stable.
In conclusion, agriculture and manufacturing went down, services went up and construction stayed the same.

Why this is Band 6: criterion by criterion
Task Achievement
Band 6The report covers all four sectors and the figures are reported accurately. An overview is present, but it is weak: "there were many changes in the employment" does not say what those changes were, and the clear overall picture — a shift of workers out of agriculture and manufacturing into services, with construction unchanged — only appears at the very end, in a final sentence that repeats the body rather than summarising it. The writer also adds irrelevant speculation ("This is probably because many farmers moved to the cities"), which Task 1 does not ask for because the table gives no reasons. The comparisons between sectors are limited, so the key features are adequately but not clearly highlighted — Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion
Band 6The information is arranged coherently and there is a clear overall progression through the four sectors. The linking, however, is mechanical: the body paragraphs are organised as "Firstly", "Secondly", "Thirdly", "Finally", so the report reads as a list of separate sectors instead of grouping the falling sectors together and contrasting them with services. Paragraphing is not always logical — agriculture and manufacturing share a paragraph but services has its own, and the construction paragraph is a single sentence. This is Band 6 cohesion.
Lexical Resource
Band 6The vocabulary is adequate, and there are some accurate data expressions such as "accounted for", "fell steadily", "reached a peak of" and "remained stable". There is noticeable repetition ("decreased … decreased again", "went down", "went up"), and some informal or imprecise choices: "increased a lot" and "the most popular sector" (popular is not the right word for employment — the largest employer). There is one spelling/word-form error, "rised" (rose). These errors do not impede communication, so Lexical Resource is Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Band 6There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with "but" and a relative clause ("which means that…"), though most sentences follow the same simple pattern. Errors are noticeable: agreement in "The table show" and "two thirds of workers was working", "the services was" (article plus agreement), an unnecessary article in "the employment", and a comma splice in "construction was 10% in all three years, it remained stable". These errors rarely reduce communication, which fits Band 6.
Useful vocabulary and collocations
- fell steadily
- accurate verb + adverb for a consistent fall; use it for both agriculture and manufacturing instead of repeating "decreased".
- accounted for
- the key Task 1 verb for shares of a total; a Band 7 report uses it throughout.
- reached a peak of
- correct for the highest point; with a trend that is still rising, reached or climbed to is also safe.
- remained stable
- precise for an unchanged figure; also stayed constant at 10%.
How this report could reach Band 7
- 1Write a clear overview straight after the introduction, for example: Overall, employment shifted markedly towards services, while the shares in agriculture and manufacturing fell and construction remained unchanged.
- 2Remove the speculation about farmers moving to cities; Task 1 reports only what the data shows.
- 3Group the data instead of listing sectors one by one: one paragraph comparing the two declining sectors, one on the rise of services with construction as a contrast.
