In recent years, a growing number of companies have experimented with a four-day working week, claiming that reduced hours improve both staff well-being and organisational performance. I largely agree that, when implemented carefully, a shorter working week can benefit both employees and businesses, although it is not universally suitable.
From the workers’ perspective, the advantages are substantial. A three-day weekend gives employees more time to rest, pursue hobbies and maintain family relationships, which can significantly reduce stress and burnout. For instance, in several European trials, staff reported better sleep and lower anxiety levels when their hours were cut without a reduction in pay. In the long term, this improved work–life balance can translate into fewer sick days and greater loyalty to the employer, as employees feel valued and less overwhelmed.
Companies can also gain from this arrangement. A key benefit is higher productivity per hour. When staff know they have only four days to complete their tasks, they are often more focused and less inclined to waste time in unnecessary meetings or informal conversations. A well-publicised trial in the United Kingdom showed that many firms maintained or even increased output despite the reduced schedule, partly because employees were more motivated and less fatigued. Moreover, offering a four-day week can help organisations attract and retain talented workers in competitive labour markets.
Nevertheless, a shorter week is not a universal remedy. In sectors requiring continuous customer service or physical presence, such as healthcare or retail, it may be difficult to compress hours without hiring extra staff or reducing service quality. Small businesses with thin profit margins may also struggle to rearrange schedules or absorb additional labour costs.
In conclusion, I believe a four-day working week can be highly beneficial for both employees and companies in many contexts, primarily by improving well-being and enhancing productivity. However, its success depends on the nature of the industry and thoughtful planning to avoid disruptions to essential services.
