Whether governments should prioritise funding for endangered animals or focus exclusively on human needs is a contentious issue. While some argue that scarce public resources must go directly to people, I believe that protecting endangered species is both a moral duty and a practical necessity for human survival.

Those who oppose large-scale spending on wildlife conservation usually emphasise urgent human problems. In many countries, health systems are underfunded, schools are overcrowded and public housing is inadequate. From this perspective, allocating millions to protect a rare bird or large predator can appear irresponsible when citizens lack basic medical care or clean drinking water. Furthermore, critics argue that conservation projects sometimes benefit tourists and scientists more than local communities, reinforcing the view that these funds are a luxury rather than a necessity.

However, focusing narrowly on short-term human needs overlooks the long-term consequences of biodiversity loss. Endangered species are often key parts of complex ecosystems that provide vital services to humans, such as clean air, fertile soil and stable climates. For example, the decline of pollinating insects directly threatens global food security, while the loss of mangrove forests and coral reefs increases coastal vulnerability to storms and flooding. In this sense, spending on conservation is not a charitable extra but a form of insurance that protects future generations.

In my view, governments must integrate both priorities instead of treating them as mutually exclusive. Well-designed conservation projects can create jobs in eco-tourism, support indigenous livelihoods and enhance sustainable agriculture. The successful recovery of the giant panda in China, for instance, was achieved alongside rural development schemes that improved incomes and infrastructure. Therefore, public money should be invested in programmes that clearly link species protection with human welfare, rather than choosing one over the other.

In conclusion, although addressing immediate human needs is undeniably important, neglecting endangered animals ultimately undermines human prosperity. A balanced, integrated approach offers the best use of government funds.
