Advertising targeted at children has become a controversial issue in many societies. While some argue that such advertising should be totally prohibited, others believe it is a legitimate business practice. I largely agree that advertising aimed directly at children should be banned, although limited exceptions may be justified for carefully regulated educational content.

The main reason for supporting a ban is that children are especially vulnerable and lack the critical thinking skills needed to interpret commercial messages. Young children often cannot distinguish between information and persuasion, so colourful advertisements with catchy jingles can easily lead them to pester their parents for products they neither need nor genuinely want. This “pester power” not only puts financial pressure on families but can also damage parent–child relationships when demands are repeatedly refused. In my view, it is unethical for powerful corporations, supported by professional psychologists and marketers, to exploit this developmental weakness.

Moreover, a substantial proportion of child-directed advertising promotes unhealthy products, particularly sugary snacks, fast food and carbonated drinks. Numerous studies have shown a link between intensive junk-food marketing and rising childhood obesity rates. For example, in many Western countries, children are exposed to fast-food adverts during peak cartoon-watching hours, normalising poor dietary choices. If governments restrict such advertising, they would be taking a relatively simple public-health measure that could reduce long-term medical costs and improve quality of life for the next generation.

That said, a narrow category of advertising might be acceptable if tightly controlled. Public-service campaigns that encourage reading, exercise or environmental awareness could be presented in a child-friendly way, provided they do not promote commercial brands. However, this is an argument for regulation, not for leaving the current system untouched.

In conclusion, because of children’s psychological vulnerability and the clear health risks associated with many advertised products, I believe that most commercial advertising directed at children should be banned outright, with only limited space for strictly non-commercial, educational messages.

Why this response works

This essay would likely achieve a high band because it addresses the task fully, presenting a clear position throughout and qualifying it sensibly (strongly in favour of a ban with narrow exceptions). Ideas are well extended with logical explanations and concrete examples, showing strong task response. Coherence is maintained through clear topic sentences and accurate cohesion. Lexical resource is varied and precise (e.g. “pester power”, “developmental weakness”, “public-service campaigns”) with natural collocations. Grammar is accurate and flexible, using a range of complex structures with only minor, if any, slips.
