IELTS Score Requirements for Singapore
Sources checked 2 September 2026
Quick answer
Singapore sets no national IELTS requirement. The ICA’s Student’s Pass checklist names no language test, Employment Pass eligibility turns on salary and COMPASS points rather than English, and the Ministry of Health says foreign nurses meet the English standard through interviews and the licensure examination rather than a test score. Universities typically ask 6.0 to 6.5 — NUS 6.5 in overall, reading and writing, and NTU 6.0 overall. Confirm with the institution.
What IELTS score do you need for Singapore?
The band you need depends entirely on why you are taking the test. Each row below links to the authority that publishes the figure, because requirements change and the source page is always more current than any summary of it.
| Purpose | Typical requirement | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student visa | No IELTS score set - the institution decides | ICA's Student's Pass checklist covers the school's Registration Acknowledgement Letter, travel and family documents and a photograph, and names no language test. | |
| Skilled migration / work visa | No English test required | Employment Pass eligibility is a two-stage test of the qualifying salary and at least 40 COMPASS points; no language test appears in the criteria. | |
| Undergraduate study | Typically 6.0-6.5 overall | NUS asks 6.5 in Overall, Reading and Writing and SIT 6.5, while NTU accepts 6.0 overall with 6 in Writing and Speaking. | |
| Postgraduate study | Typically 6.0-6.5 overall, rising to 7.0 at some schools | NTU's coursework guide sets 6.0 or 6.5 for most schools and 7.0 for a few, such as the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. | |
| Nursing / medical registration | No IELTS or OET score set | MOH says foreign nurses meet the English standard through recruitment interviews and the Singapore Nursing Board's licensure examination, which is conducted in English. |
What do Singapore universities ask for?
These are the minimums each university published on its own admissions pages when we checked on 2 September 2026. They are institution-wide floors: individual courses frequently ask for more, so confirm the figure on the page for your exact programme before you book a test.
| University | Undergraduate | Postgraduate | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| National University of Singapore (NUS) | 6.5 in Overall, Reading and Writing (Academic) | Set per programme, not university-wide | The undergraduate figure comes from the Office of Admissions table dated August 2026; IELTS Indicator and One Skill Retake are not accepted, and scores are valid two years. | |
| Nanyang Technological University (NTU) | 6.0 overall with 6 in Writing and 6 in Speaking | 6.0-6.5 overall depending on school; 7.0 at a few | Programme-specific: Nanyang Business School asks 6.5 and Materials Science & Engineering 6.0; tests must be within two years of the application. | |
| Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) | No prescribed minimum score | Not verified | SUTD states applications are reviewed comprehensively on academic and non-academic achievement; a test score is compulsory only where English was not the medium of instruction. | |
| Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) | 6.5 (Academic) | Not verified | Applicants who fall short may be invited to sit an English test run by SIT; some programmes set a higher requirement and the higher of the two applies. |
How should you plan for a target score?
Work backwards from the per-skill minimum rather than the overall band. Almost every requirement above includes a floor for each of the four skills, so a strong average with one weak skill still fails. Establish where you are per skill, then target the gap — and remember that the overall band is the rounded mean of the four, so 6.25 rounds up to 6.5 and a single half-band improvement can clear a threshold outright.
To see what the examiners are actually looking for at your target band, read the IELTS band descriptors.
