Best Free IELTS Writing Checkers in 2026: Honest Guide

Search for a free IELTS writing checker and you will find dozens of tools promising an instant band score. The honest picture in 2026 is messier than the marketing: the official IELTS organisations publish excellent free material but do not mark your essay automatically, while the AI checkers that do mark it disagree with each other, publish very different free allowances, and in several cases do not state a free allowance at all.

This guide is ordered by what kind of help you are getting, not by any ranking of quality. Official and free study resources come first because they are authoritative about the standard you are being marked against. AI checkers with a free tier come second. Our own tool comes last, clearly labelled as ours. Everything below was checked against each provider's own website on 2 September 2026; terms change often, so verify before you rely on a figure.

What can a free IELTS writing checker actually do?

IELTS Writing is marked by trained examiners on four equally weighted criteria — Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. No automated tool has access to that marking process, and the ones we looked at say so themselves. Engnovate states that its result "may be accurate within 75%-95%" compared with an official IELTS score and should be treated as "a guide rather than a definitive score". Writing9 says it gives a scoring estimation based on IELTS standards and that your final score on the actual exam might be slightly different.

That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to use them for the job they are good at: telling you which of the four criteria is dragging your essay down, so you know what to practise next. Official and free study resources

The official IELTS site (ielts.org)

The official Writing test resources page offers free sample test questions and practice papers, a video series on how the Writing test is marked, and PDF guides to the assessment criteria and how examiners assess Writing. There is no automated marking here, and the page is explicit that assessment is done by examiners applying analytical criteria — which is exactly why it is the right place to learn the standard. Note that the British Council's own preparation site was not reachable for us on the day of writing, so we have not described its current offering; check takeielts.britishcouncil.org directly.

Cambridge English

The Cambridge English IELTS preparation page offers paper-based sample tests to download and points to free sample questions on the IELTS site. It also lists commercial books and courses; no prices appear on that page. Again, there is no automated essay scoring — this is practice material, not feedback.

IELTS Liz

IELTS Liz publishes a large free library of lessons, model answers, topics and tips across all four skills, with a paid store of advanced lessons and e-books alongside it. The homepage we read describes no essay-marking service, automated or otherwise. It is best used the way a textbook is used: read a model answer, work out why it is structured as it is, then write your own.

AI checkers with a free tier

Engnovate

Engnovate's Task 2 essay checker is the only tool in this list that printed both a concrete free allowance and its actual prices on the page: two Writing evaluations per month free, with premium plans listed from $11.97 for one month up to $61.97 for twelve at the time of checking. It returns an overall band plus a breakdown across the four criteria. Two things to read before you paste anything in: Engnovate's own accuracy caveat quoted above, and its warning that essays checked on the free tier may become public unless you subscribe for privacy.

Writing9

Writing9 says it checks your writing, shows what you did well and what you can improve, and lets you know your band score in seconds, covering Task 2 essays, General Training Task 1 letters and Academic Task 1 charts. It shows weekly, monthly and yearly plan tiers. We could not read a free-tier allowance or any price from the pages we fetched, and the site appears to require an account, so check its current terms yourself before planning around it.

ieltswritingchecker.uk

ieltswritingchecker.uk states plainly that it is free with no registration, no payments and no word limits, and that you paste your text to receive instant band score predictions. It advertises "±0.5 band accuracy" — that is the site's own marketing claim, not something we or anyone else has independently verified. The lack of a signup wall makes it the lowest-friction option here for a quick second opinion.

IELTS AI Evaluator

IELTS AI Evaluator offers a free demo check that its page says works without signing up, returning criterion-by-criterion bands with paragraph-level feedback. It refers to a Pro plan for features such as a model rewrite; no prices are shown on the page we read, and the number of free demo checks is not stated.

SmallTalk2Me

SmallTalk2Me is primarily an AI speaking-practice platform — its homepage headline is about speaking practice and a level test — but its product list does include an IELTS Writing test simulator. The homepage says you can sign up in under a minute with no payment required, but it does not describe what the Writing product returns, so we cannot tell you whether it produces a band. Worth a look if Speaking is your weaker skill.

IELTS Science

IELTS Science is a Vietnamese-language platform offering AI evaluation of writing and speaking plus classroom tools for teachers, with subscription tiers priced in Vietnamese dong. Its homepage states no free allowance and requires an account. If you read Vietnamese it is worth investigating; if you do not, the interface will slow you down more than the feedback helps.

How should you actually use a free checker?

1. Write under real conditions first. Forty minutes for Task 2, no notes, no dictionary. A band estimate on an essay you laboured over for two hours tells you nothing about test day.
2. Read the criterion breakdown, not the headline band. The number will move between tools; the pattern of which criterion is weakest is far more stable and far more useful.
3. Check a second tool when the verdict surprises you. Two free checkers disagreeing by a band is normal and is itself information: your essay is sitting on a boundary.
4. Take the fix back to the descriptors. If a tool flags Coherence and Cohesion, work on cohesive devices and paragraphing rather than adding more linking words at random.
5. Rewrite the same essay once. The rewrite is where the learning happens. Rewriting one essay well beats running five new ones through a checker.

The honest bottom line

The best free setup in 2026 is not a single tool: it is official practice papers for the questions, the published descriptors for the standard, and one or two AI checkers for a fast signal on which criterion to attack next. Start by writing one full essay on a fresh prompt from the Task 2 topic bank, then put it through whichever checker you trust — including, if you like, ours — and act on the weakest criterion rather than the number.
