In many parts of the world, minority languages are disappearing at an alarming rate. This phenomenon is driven by a range of economic, social and political forces. In my view, while not every language can realistically be saved, serious efforts should be made to preserve as many as possible, given their cultural and cognitive value.

One key reason for language loss is globalisation, which greatly increases the prestige and practicality of dominant languages such as English, Mandarin or Spanish. Parents in remote communities often encourage children to use these majority languages to access higher education, better jobs and wider social networks. Over time, the minority language becomes restricted to older generations and informal settings, eventually falling out of everyday use. Urbanisation intensifies this trend: when young people move to cities, they may abandon their ancestral tongue to avoid discrimination or simply because there are few opportunities to use it.

Government policies and education systems can also accelerate linguistic decline. In the past, many states promoted a single “national language” in schools and public life, stigmatising local tongues as backward. For example, numerous indigenous languages in the Americas and Australia declined rapidly after children were punished for speaking them at school. Even when such policies are no longer officially enforced, the historical damage and lingering attitudes often remain.

Despite these pressures, I believe efforts should be made to keep minority languages alive. Each language encapsulates unique ways of understanding the world, including specialised ecological knowledge and oral literature that cannot be fully translated. From a scientific perspective, linguistic diversity also provides valuable insights into human cognition and history. Practically, revitalisation need not be unrealistic or romanticised; community-led immersion schools for Māori in New Zealand and Welsh-medium education in the UK demonstrate that strong bilingualism is achievable without sacrificing economic opportunities. Ultimately, supporting minority languages through schooling, media and legal recognition helps protect cultural identity and enriches humanity’s shared heritage.
