Over time, this leads to chronic fatigue, headaches and heightened anxiety. In East Asian countries, for instance, where heavy homework loads are common, adolescent burnout and depression rates are notably high. A second issue is that excessive homework can actually damage learning. Exhausted children tend to complete tasks mechanically, memorising formulas or model answers rather than developing genuine understanding, creativity or critical thinking. This can transform learning into a joyless chore and erode students’ intrinsic motivation to study.
However, these problems are neither inevitable nor irreversible. One key solution is to introduce clear national or regional guidelines limiting the quantity of homework by age group and subject. Finland, which assigns relatively little homework, still achieves excellent results, suggesting that focused, well-designed tasks outperform sheer volume. Schools should therefore prioritise quality over quantity, setting short, meaningful assignments that consolidate classroom learning instead of repetitive drills. Furthermore, communication with parents is crucial. Workshops can help families recognise that play, rest and extracurricular activities are legitimate components of education, not distractions from it. Finally, schools can build supervised homework sessions into the timetable, ensuring that children complete most of their work before going home.
In conclusion, an excessive homework burden harms students’ health and undermines effective learning. By limiting workload, improving task design and reshaping parental expectations, education systems can protect children’s wellbeing while still promoting high academic achievement.
