Whether History should remain central in school curricula is controversial. While some argue that it is indispensable for young people, others claim that Science and technology are far more relevant to modern life. I believe both are vital, but in contemporary education Science and technology deserve slightly greater emphasis.

Those who prioritise History stress its role in shaping informed citizens. By studying past wars, revolutions and social movements, students learn how today’s institutions and values have evolved. This understanding can foster tolerance and prevent the repetition of past mistakes, such as the rise of extremist ideologies. Furthermore, History develops critical thinking: pupils must evaluate sources, detect bias and construct coherent arguments, skills that are transferable to politics, media literacy and everyday decision‑making.

On the other hand, supporters of Science and technology highlight their direct impact on economic development and personal opportunity. Modern societies depend on scientific literacy for everything from combating climate change to managing public health crises. Students who grasp basic principles of biology, coding or data analysis are more employable in a labour market dominated by automation and digital communication. For example, in many countries, industries like renewable energy and artificial intelligence are expanding rapidly and require a workforce with strong STEM backgrounds, not detailed historical knowledge.

In my view, although downgrading History would be short‑sighted, schools must acknowledge current realities. A curriculum where Science and technology receive more teaching hours, while History is taught rigorously but more selectively, seems sensible. Historical study can focus on key national and global events, human rights and civic education, whereas Science and technology can equip students with the analytical and practical skills needed to innovate and solve pressing global problems.

In conclusion, History nurtures critical, responsible citizens, whereas Science and technology drive progress and employability. Both should be compulsory, but in today’s world Science and technology merit a somewhat larger share of classroom time.
