Older Parents

In many societies, individuals are increasingly choosing to marry and have children in their thirties rather than in early adulthood. In my view, this is largely a positive development, despite a few medical and social concerns.

The main advantages of later parenthood relate to emotional maturity and financial stability. By their thirties, most people have completed their education, established a career path and gained some economic security. This allows them to provide better housing, nutrition and educational opportunities for their children. For instance, parents who are not struggling with student debt or unstable employment are more likely to invest time and money in their child’s development, from quality childcare to extracurricular activities. Older parents also tend to have clearer personal values and stronger relationship skills, which can contribute to a more harmonious home environment.

There are, however, undeniable drawbacks. From a biological perspective, fertility declines with age, particularly for women, increasing the risk of complications such as difficulty conceiving, miscarriage or genetic disorders. Healthcare systems in countries where late parenthood is common are already reporting more high-risk pregnancies and higher demand for fertility treatment, which can be financially and emotionally draining. Socially, a generation gap may become more pronounced; parents in their forties or fifties might struggle to relate to teenagers’ rapidly changing digital culture, potentially weakening communication.

Nonetheless, I believe these disadvantages can be mitigated. Medical monitoring and reproductive technologies continue to improve, and awareness campaigns can encourage prospective parents not to delay family formation excessively. As for the cultural gap, many older parents are themselves digitally literate and can adapt if they prioritise open communication.

On balance, having children later in life is a positive trend because the gains in stability, preparedness and parenting capacity generally outweigh the medical and social risks, provided individuals make informed, realistic decisions about timing.
