The sharp rise in global temperatures and extreme weather events has intensified calls for an urgent reduction in the use of fossil fuels. I fully agree that the international community must act immediately to curb oil and gas consumption, although the nature of this action should be both decisive and realistic.

There are compelling environmental reasons for immediate global coordination. Fossil fuels are the primary driver of greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change does not respect national borders. If only a few countries cut their consumption while others continue business as usual, overall emissions will remain dangerously high. For instance, even if the European Union achieves carbon neutrality, its efforts will be undermined if rapidly industrialising regions keep expanding their oil and gas use. This collective-action problem clearly justifies strong international frameworks, such as binding emissions targets and transparent reporting mechanisms.

In addition, delaying action increases both human and economic costs. The longer societies depend on fossil fuels, the more infrastructure is locked into carbon-intensive pathways, making later transitions far more expensive. Recent climate-related disasters, from devastating floods in South Asia to unprecedented wildfires in Southern Europe, demonstrate that the financial burden of inaction already exceeds the investment needed for a planned transition.

However, demanding immediate, across-the-board reductions without support would be unfair and counterproductive. Many developing countries still rely on cheap fossil fuels to expand basic services, such as electricity and public transport. Therefore, international action should combine strict global reduction goals with generous financial and technological assistance. Richer nations, which historically emitted the most, ought to shoulder a larger share of the cost by funding renewable energy projects and sharing green technology.

In conclusion, urgent international intervention to reduce oil and gas use is essential, but it must be structured to recognise different economic realities. Only a coordinated, equitable approach can deliver both environmental protection and sustainable development.
