Learning a Foreign Language

Some people argue that the sole practical purpose of learning a foreign language is to enable travel or employment abroad. Others contend that additional educational, cultural and personal reasons also justify language study. I believe that while overseas travel and work are major motivations, they are far from the only valid benefits.

Those who prioritise travel and work often focus on economic efficiency. From this perspective, language learning is a time-consuming investment that should deliver clear, measurable returns. Being able to communicate with colleagues, negotiate with clients or handle everyday situations in a foreign country can indeed create job opportunities and make travel safer and more enjoyable. For example, a nurse who learns German may find it easier to secure a well-paid position in a German hospital, while tourists who speak basic Spanish are less likely to be cheated or misled in Spanish-speaking countries.

However, limiting the value of foreign languages to these purposes overlooks several important advantages. Firstly, language learning sharpens cognitive skills such as memory, concentration and problem-solving. Numerous studies suggest that bilingual people may delay age-related mental decline, even if they never live abroad. Secondly, languages are gateways to culture. Reading literature or watching films in the original language allows learners to access humour, emotion and nuance that are often lost in translation. Finally, in a globalised world, communication with foreigners increasingly happens online rather than face to face. An engineer in India collaborating remotely with a French company, or a gamer chatting with Korean teammates, may benefit greatly from foreign language skills without ever leaving their home country.

In conclusion, although travelling and working overseas remain powerful and practical reasons to acquire another language, they do not fully capture the intellectual, cultural and social benefits of language learning. In my view, these broader advantages mean that studying a foreign language is worthwhile, even for those who never intend to go abroad.
