One key reason is that modern video games are deliberately designed to be highly immersive and addictive. Sophisticated graphics, reward systems and online competition offer instant excitement that traditional sports often cannot match, especially for children who may lack natural athletic ability or confidence. In addition, urban lifestyles limit access to safe outdoor spaces; for many students living in high-rise apartments, a screen is simply the most convenient source of entertainment. Academic pressure also plays a role: after long hours of study, computer games appear to be the quickest way to relax, whereas sports demand more time, organisation and sometimes financial resources.

To address this issue, schools should integrate regular, varied physical activities into the timetable rather than treating sport as an optional extra. Offering a broad range of non-competitive options, such as dance, yoga or climbing, can attract students who are intimidated by traditional team games. Parents also need guidance on setting reasonable limits on screen time and modelling active lifestyles themselves. At a policy level, governments can invest in safe community sports facilities and subsidised clubs, ensuring that cost is not a barrier. Furthermore, technology itself can be harnessed through fitness apps and motion-based games that encourage movement, turning screens from a passive to an active influence.

In conclusion, students gravitate towards computer games because they are accessible, psychologically rewarding and often easier than joining sports. By reshaping school programmes, supporting families and improving community facilities, societies can rebalance young people’s leisure time in favour of healthier physical activities.
