Building Restoration

In many global metropolises, vast sums are spent preserving historic buildings, prompting claims that this money would be better invested in new housing and road infrastructure. While I recognise the pressing need for modern urban development, I largely disagree with diverting most funds away from restoration.

Those who prioritise new construction argue that cities face acute housing shortages and worsening traffic congestion. In rapidly growing urban centres such as Mumbai or Lagos, for instance, overcrowded slums and paralyzing gridlock directly undermine public health and economic productivity. From this perspective, allocating funds to expand affordable housing or upgrade road networks appears to deliver more immediate and tangible benefits than refurbishing old monuments that often serve only a small segment of the population, such as tourists or affluent residents.

However, this argument underestimates the long-term economic, cultural and environmental value of heritage buildings. Architecturally significant structures frequently become focal points for tourism, as seen in European cities like Prague or Florence, where historic centres generate substantial revenue and employment. Allowing such buildings to decay would ultimately reduce a city’s global appeal and its capacity to attract visitors, investors and skilled workers.

Moreover, historic architecture contributes to a city’s identity and social cohesion. Living among buildings that reflect different eras helps citizens understand their collective past and fosters a sense of belonging that cannot be recreated with uniformly modern high-rises. Restoration can also be environmentally beneficial: retrofitting existing structures typically consumes fewer resources and produces less waste than wholesale demolition and reconstruction.

In my view, the real issue is not whether to fund restoration or development, but how to strike a balanced allocation. Governments should protect and sensitively restore the most significant historic buildings, while also investing heavily in new housing and transport. Neglecting either priority would be short-sighted and ultimately harmful to urban life.
